As a writer, former triple threat, and someone who grew up in a family that encouraged creativity, I believe the arts are so important. For those who practice them, the arts foster self-expression and creativity, fun and excitement, and dedication to a craft. For observers, the arts provide an enriching experience that can inspire, heal and often impart a new perspective. For these reasons, I’m excited to unveil our second annual arts issue. Of course, the timing is intentional – it’s during this time of year that fall exhibits are in full swing, art festivals abound, and holiday performances are on the horizon. The arts have a way of bringing joy to others, and in a season that hinges on joyful celebrations, it’s no wonder that the arts truly shine this time of year. Head to page 84 to read about our top 10 picks of artistic happenings around the Valley, from galas that give back to the arts to details on the larger-than-life installations at the annual Canal Convergence. To get a glimpse behind the arts, check out page 46, where the stories of five visual and performing artists are shared, including our cover gal and singer Angela Ferrari alongside a muralist, a ballerina, a painter, and a harpist. Learn about their forays into the arts and why the creative path is one they each chose to pursue. Other artistic amusements: peruse art while sipping wine at the Kierland Pop Festival (page 67), jam out at Live & Local benefiting Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale (page 74), attend an artist talk at SMoCA (page 74), listen to Americana music at Desert Botanical Garden (page 76), explore Old Town’s galleries during a contemporary-themed art walk (page 76), and dance the night away at Jetaway Music Festival (page 78). All these artistic explorations are sure to make you hungry – so stay tuned for our annual food and beverage issue coming up next month. Until then, as I said in my November note last year, get crafty, get creative and get going! ll the best, A Chelsea Young Editor-in-Chief chelsea@richmanmediagroup.com Instagram: @young_chelsea Connect with us! DEDICATED DUO

Mark and Lauren Teahen are on a mission to drive out domestic violence.

Husband and wife Mark and Lauren Teahen’s passion hits close to home. As founders of the annual Driving Out Domestic Violence Golf Tournament and Gala, which takes place this month, the two have dedicated much of their lives to providing support for

victims of domestic violence in the community. In 2010, Lauren began volunteering for Chrysalis, a domestic abuse agency that provides emergency shelter and counseling, among other programs, that impact the lives of more than 1,400 people each year. She was immediately inspired to do

Pulse UP CLOSE more for the organization. “Lauren witnessed domestic violence firsthand as a child and is aware of the lasting effects it can have,” Mark says. “Her mother, Shelley, was abused for years. Chrysalis was the type of organization they needed, but sadly never found.” Working with Mark, a former professional baseball player for the Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays, Lauren conceptualized a fundraising event to help Chrysalis grow their programs. “As I saw in my own family, domestic violence doesn’t know any boundaries,” Lauren says. “It can strike any time, in any family, and no one is immune. That’s why it is so very important to have a place like Chrysalis.” The Teahens note that the first Driving Out Domestic Violence event was thrown together quickly and held in their own backyard. Back then, they set out to raise $70,000 dollars. “And that’s just what we did – and then some,” Mark says. But a few months after the first event, Lauren’s mother suddenly passed away. “After losing her mother, Lauren knew the best way to honor her was to continue sharing their story, raising funds, and spreading awareness,” Mark says. “Since then, the event has grown not only in size, but in dollars raised. Heading into our ninth annual event, we have raised $3 million for Chrysalis and victims of domestic abuse.” The difference they have made in the community is only one of the many reasons the two continue to advocate for the life-changing organization. “Any time I think about my mother and the pain she suffered up until the day she died, I find myself compelled to continuously do more,” Lauren says. “Knowing that the work we do might save just one person is all the inspiration we need to keep going.”

Spread the Love Driving Out Domestic Violence isn’t Mark and Lauren’s first experience with giving back. “As a professional baseball player, I was given a powerful platform to help others in need,” Mark says. “When Lauren and I began dating in Kansas City, we started a charity event that benefited children with special needs. Starting that event showed Lauren and me what a powerful impact we can make.” Over the years, Mark has called on the connections he’s made in the baseball community to add fuel to the fundraising fire that he and Lauren began all those years ago. Today, the annual gala and golf tournament alike feature appearances from dozens of current and retired players from the MLB, NFL, NBA and PGA. “We are lucky to have such great support in Arizona and fortunate to have supportive friends from around the country get involved in this event,” Mark says. After his successful stint in baseball, including being a featured player in the book Moneyball, which inspired the 2011 film of the same name, Mark decided to try his hand in another endeavor: running a restaurant. In 2015, he and Lauren opened Sorso Wine Room at Scottsdale Quarter. Whether it’s owning a business or hosting a life-changing

32

So Scottsdale! November ‘19

charity event, the pair’s motivation remains consistent. “Mark and I were both raised by strong, caring people who instilled in us the value of helping others,” Lauren says. “Now that we have three young children ourselves – Mac, 7; Cal, 4; and Meyer, 3 – it’s important for us to pass along that same wisdom. Although they’re too young to completely understand the work we do, knowing we’ve created an event that has helped Chrysalis change the lives of so many is something we will be able to share with them someday and hopefully inspire them.” In the meantime, they are continually driven by their ability to contribute to a cause so near and dear to their hearts, and with almost 20 people per minute experiencing physical abuse by an intimate partner in the U.S. alone (according to the National Coalition for Domestic Violence), the world needs the hope that people like Mark and Lauren continually spark in others. “Working so closely with Chrysalis over the past nine years has allowed us to witness the difference that can be made in the life of a victim,” Lauren says. “Knowing the funds we raise help them provide emergency shelter, counseling, advocacy, offender treatment, transitional housing, community education, and more is what drives us to continue the work we do.” The ninth annual Driving Out Domestic Violence Golf Tournament and Gala will be held on Nov. 15 and 16 at Starfire Golf Club (Nov. 15 tournament) and Ross Aviation (Nov. 16 gala). The Hottest Fall Hair Trends with Color Specialist, Rodney Gentry

“This season, it’s all about blends and natural, warmer tones,” says Rodney Gentry, hair color expert and master stylist. “There is so much you can do with your hair to create just about any look you want.” There’s no surprise that Ombré is extremely popular this fall. It’s a hair coloring trend that doesn’t seem to be wavering; only changing by the season. This fall, the Ombré style uses warmer tones are blended for a subtle, more natural look. Another gorgeous blended color that’s hot this season is Mushroom Blonde. Mushroom Blonde is an ashy mix between blonde and brunette, creating an ashy, gray blonde with dark undertones—think of the color variety on the underside of a mushroom. “It’s excellent for weaving colored pieces around your face to create a subtle and natural change,” says Rodney. This color option is a great way for blondes to spend time on the darker side. Conversely, there is Mushroom Brown for the brunettes who want

to go a little lighter, while creating a multi-dimensional hair color. In this instance, the colors are subtle shades of brown and gray. Copper tones are all the rage as more and more people desire a look of red without the commitment and hassle of keeping up with red hair. Additionally, rooted gold tones are a favorite this season. There’s also a variety of feminine chestnuts and browns. “These colors tend to not fade as much so it’s more low-maintenance,” Rodney explains. For those pesky gray hairs, Rodney reveals that the key to gray coverage is to not cover it 100%. Instead, he prefers to use a neutral color on select pieces to make the grays look highlighted. This way, people don’t have to recolor as often. By doing this technique, it saves the condition of the hair since you’re not covering all of your roots as often. For those of us who lived through the 80’s, you may see familiar-looking accessories making a comeback.

A STROLL DOWN AVERY LANE Darlene Richert curates one-of-a-kind finds at her Scottsdale store

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

From designer sofas to antique furniture, Darlene Richert takes consignment to an elevated level at her Scottsdale-based store, Avery Lane. Most days, Richert is busy designing vignettes for her showrooms or meeting at clients’ estates to preview their consignment items, but her days didn’t always revolve around creativity and vintage furniture. “My past life was in corporate America working predominantly in the private golf development arena,” says Richert, who envisioned owning a tactile business that could provide a space for her kids to chip in and learn the value of hard work. “I wanted to create a place where my kids could have their first jobs and be part of a family business.” So, with a stylish eye and a network of local realtors and designers, Richert took a leap of faith and opened Avery Lane in 2012 without an ounce of retail or design experience. “I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears working endless hours, but that’s what it takes to get a small business up and running. It’s been a labor of love!” Today, with her children still part of the business, Richert’s customers come from all over the Valley seeking one-of-a-kind items including an 18th-century Italian ceramic fireplace, original oil paintings from Roberto Márquez, a carved wine cellar door from a ship dated 1667, and an ornate antique chinoiserie desk – all of which have made their way to the Avery Lane showroom. “I like to say our inventory revolves like a Parisian merry-go-round,” Richert says. A recent expansion in September added 11,000 square feet next door to Avery Lane’s original showroom, making the two a one-stop shopping experience. The addition, which features an expansive area of beds, nightstands and dressers and a wider selection of rugs, including luxury Persian and Tibetan varieties, also made Avery Lane the largest consignment store in the state – and one of the largest in the U.S. “We are extremely proud of our new showroom,” she says, noting Avery Lane is equally proud of its philanthropic pursuits, namely supporting Scottsdale Philharmonic, Rosie’s House, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Phoenix Theatre Company. “I’m also working with some furniture-makers to potentially create locally made pieces with the Avery Lane brand,” Richert says. “That’s a bit of a dream, but this whole journey has been a dream.”

Margerie St. John and Megan Ashby have perfected the art of gifting through their company, Be Noted

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Finding the perfect gift often poses a challenge – and that’s where Margerie St. John and Megan Ashby hope to help. As co-owners of Be Noted (www. be-noted.com), a specialty gifting company celebrating one year in business this month, St. John and Ashby carefully source and style curated gift boxes so you don’t have to. St. John and Ashby’s friendship developed over the span of seven years thanks to their shared passion for The Bachelor (and the occasional glass of wine) and has since evolved into sharing a business together. With a knack for creating beautiful things, St. John is the detail-oriented half of the dynamic duo. On the flip side, Ashby comes from a background of marketing and project management, which she utilizes to provide practical problem-solving within the company. After becoming moms, the women saw a need for better gift-giving options. “We were amazed by all of the support we received from other women and mothers when we started Be Noted,” St. John says. “We are so lucky to know, collaborate, support and work alongside so many smart and hardworking females.” Whether you’re celebrating an engagement, welcoming a new baby, or simply want to say thank you (after all, Thanksgiving is on the horizon!), Be Noted offers something for a variety of recipients and occasions, all beautifully packaged with a choice of ribbon color and personalized message. The ladies carefully select each product, focusing on small businesses – and local ones when possible. Customers can shop gift boxes for him or for her – think things like “Good Morning Mom,” which has coffee and a cute mug for Mom, or a “Groom’s Box,” featuring a carry-on cocktail kit and a fun groom’s guide. There is also the option to build your own box. “What started out as a thoughtful and convenient gifting service for parents has expanded into including corporate and client gifting,” says Ashby, noting options include custom stationary and branded packaging. “What I love about creating gifts for people is that you get to be a part of the celebration,” St. John says. “To be a part of even the smallest gesture of kindness really makes you feel like you’re helping put positivity out into the universe.”

ARTISTIC AESTHETIC Nir Katularu’s creative style reflects his heritage and profession BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH MARIE

While the mingling of fashion and art is not a new concept, artist Nir Katularu pours his vibrant Latin traditions into what he wears and what he creates on canvas. Katularu describes his aesthetic as “South American chic” thanks to his signature look of a Ramon Puig Guayabera linen shirt, 34 Heritage jeans, a Cartier watch, and a Panama hat. In fact, he always pairs a hat with his outfit, whether a flat cap or fedora. He often sports overalls with a Peter Millar T-shirt, but for dressier occasions, he opts for a colorful printed shirt or his go-to white linen shirt from Ramon Puig Guayabera, a famous Cuban tailor based in Miami’s Little Havana who often works with presidents, actors and royalty. “It brings me back to my roots in Venezuela where all the men in the Plaza Candelaria dress to play dominos in downtown Caracas,” Katularu says. In his new Fountain Hills studio, Nir Art Studio & Gallery, Katularu trades pressed linen suits for paint-splattered overalls. The public space serves as both a gallery and working studio for him to create art. “I am blessed to be able to wear the clothes that I want (and not worry when I get paint on my pants!) while expressing myself through my art,” Katularu says.

What can we always find you wearing? I always wear my father’s Cartier Tank watch, whether I’m painting or going to dinner. My dream was always to wear the same watch as my father. Do you have any go-to items? I like to wear white and pink; they are calming and fresh. I’m not afraid of pink – I love it. I also love eyeglasses. I have several pairs in different colors. I like to match them to my hats and moods. What is the most prized possession in your closet? My hat collection – I just bought several hats while I was in Munich at Max Zechbauer Tabakwaren. The patterns are amazing, and they are very unusual.

FOCUSED ON FASHION

Angela Zdrale has been immersed in the Valley’s style scene for more than a decade

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH MARIE

Native Phoenician Angela Zdrale has spent her entire career in the Phoenix fashion retail industry. From managing the Kate Spade and Tory Burch stores to her current role as the marketing manager for Saks Fifth Avenue at Biltmore Fashion Park, the trendsetter owns a seriously chic wardrobe. Zdrale prefers a feminine, modern approach to dressing and loves to include luxury pieces from designers like Alexander McQueen, Valentino, Rag & Bone, Diane von Furstenberg, and Alice + Olivia – all of which can be found at her employer (and favorite store, naturally). Standing at more than 6 feet tall, Zdrale learned early on that trends weren’t always going to work for her stature. “It’s hard enough finding something that fits properly, much less when you are chasing a trend, so I learned that classic shapes and silhouettes suit me best,” she says. Jumpsuits are, without a doubt, a statement piece that Zdrale turns to for any occasion. “I love that jumpsuits are now a wardrobe staple,” Zdrale says. “I have jumpsuits I wear for casual events, work and cocktail parties.” When she’s not sharing the season’s hottest trends, Zdrale can be found chasing her 2-year-old daughter in a T-shirt and her AG Farrah skinny jeans – a favorite thanks to the high waist and stretchy fabric.

What is your must-have item? A great dress – when I have a great dress on, I feel confident, feminine and powerful. What is the most prized possession in your closet? When I was in high school, my stepfather (who has since passed away) gave my mom, sister and me a matching string of pearls. I treasure that not only for the bond with my family, but also because I will have them forever and pass them on to my daughter. Who are your style icons? Gwyneth Paltrow and Grace Kelly are both classic beauties with effortlessly chic style.

THE FAIRY GODMOTHER OF FASHION AND BOOB WHISPERER

S

Scylvia-Elvira Danese of Danese Creations

cylvia-Elvira Danese, owner of Danese Creations, has been in business since 1971. Through her gift of custom designing, men and women can get all their custom designing, tailoring, alterations, bridal wear and all accessories, fabric, jewelry and the best fitting bra. “I’m a 3rd generation Custom Designer/Tailor in my family, I follow My Mother Maria and Grandmother Chapita,” said Danese. “My designs have made it to the Emmys, The Country Music Awards, the Oscars, the White House, The Oprah show, I’ve also been featured on First Edition, total Divas, all the local TV channels. It’s been an amazing ride for these last 48 years!” While Danese is proud of the accolades and the high profile clients that have graced her designs, some of her fondest memories are the ones that have changed the lives of others. “I saved a brides wedding day by making a beautiful, custom

wedding gown from scratch, on the day of the wedding, in 2 hours and 50 minutes, that is how I got dubbed “the Fairy Godmother Of Fashion”, she explains. “I’m also called “The Boob Whisperer” for the expert bra fittings that I do. Your boobs can either make you or break you. If they look good, you look good and feel good, sexy, young, (even if you’re old) thin, (even if you’re heavy), and your clothes fit well.” Danese is committed to helping every man or woman find their perfect fit, in addition women can get a free bra fitting. Clients need to set an appointment with her shop, and with zero obligations to purchase bras from her. “Most women just don’t know what a bra is supposed to do, how a bra is supposed to fit, how a bra has been designed, or what bra size is right for them. Industry estimates are that anywhere from 70 to 80 perfect of women are wearing the wrong size bra, although in my opinion, informed by more than 48

years of experience, it’s more like 90 percent. And there’s been no reliable source for women to go to and find out the truth about bras, bra measuring and bra sizing, until now.” If clients are not in the market for custom designing, you will find original Danese Creations designs, ready-to-wear one of a kind bridal gowns, mother of the bride or groom gowns, evening gowns, cocktail dresses, skirts, blouses, and more. Danese Creations prides themselves on being able to make custom garments from a picture or a drawing or an idea and she can do this all without requiring the client to be local. Above all, Danese has one goal for her shop “To do the impossible to get to solve all the sewing problems that come my way. My motto that I got from my Father Giacomo Danese is “Nothing is Impossible, Difficult but not Impossible”, she explains. “We never say no, it’s always yes we can, just say when!”

ANGELA FERRARI

SINGER & RECORDING ARTIST

Scottsdale-based singer and recording artist Angela Ferrari (yes, that is her real name!) enthralls listeners with her powerfully emotional voice. She always knew she wanted to be a professional singer and finally pursued her passion in 2013 after leaving the corporate world. “There was an energetic tap on my shoulder saying, ‘it’s time,’” Ferrari says of her decision to take the leap. Today, Ferrari writes all of the lyrics to her own songs, noting that she interprets experiences and unspoken emotions. “Music is a way to release those emotions that are five or six layers beneath the surface, so there’s a lot of depth,” she says. Primarily self-taught, Ferrari cites Celine Dion and Whitney Houston as early influences. “Growing up, I watched and rewatched MTV music videos to study every small detail of how the singers breathed and how their mouths moved.” Ferrari is a regular performer at local venues including Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain and Mountain Shadows as well as at events such as the Waste Management Phoenix Open. She has also opened for major artists including Train, Starship, and American Authors. One of her favorite recent performances was singing the national anthem for the NFL at the Seattle Seahawks CenturyLink Field to a sold-out crowd. “It was like everything around me disappeared, and it was just me and the microphone.” Looking ahead, Ferrari has her goals set on continuing to sing at bigger concerts and events around the world. And this month marks a milestone in her career – with one album and three singles already under her belt, Ferrari’s newest album, titled Heartbreak Mixtape, will be released Nov. 22. A release party and concert at Mountain Shadows will be held the following night, Nov. 23, where Ferrari will perform with a full band outside on the lawn – and has a surprise in store for her fans. “Music is and always has been a beautiful outlet for me,” she says. “It is a way for me to release pent up energy, by taking unspoken emotions we all feel and releasing them in a tangible way.”

JOHN “MDMN” MOODY MURALIST

John “MDMN” Moody is an artist of epic proportions – large-scale walls to be exact. “There’s always a lot going on with a lot around,” he says. Moody’s wall murals take anywhere from days to weeks to create, and it’s far from easy. He works from ladders, lifts and scaffolding while carrying equipment like aerosol cans, rollers and bucket paints. “I love to use aerosol because I am comfortable with the way the cans are designed,” Moody says. “You definitely have to learn the techniques the can offers. It takes a lot of time and practice to use this tool, and it isn’t mastered by just anyone.” Growing up in the ’90s, Moody cites X-Men trading cards, Nintendo games, and comic books as having a great impact on his murals and wall art. Today, Moody is influenced by urban contemporaries such as Kaws, Roa and Obey Giant. “These were some of the first artists I looked up to and helped motivate the push into my creative journey,” he says. Moving from Phoenix to Los Angeles when he was 22 helped Moody turn his artistic aspirations into reality. “It led me to discover the city’s street culture – stickers, street art, graffiti – and I just started putting my characters in the streets any way I could.” After working full-time at a corporate job in Los Angeles, Moody had a moment of clarity and moved back to Phoenix in January 2018. “I woke up one morning and decided then and there I’d become a full-time artist and I quit my job. I am a big believer in taking the jump, or ‘eating the mushroom,’” he says, offering a Super Mario reference. Eating the so-called mushroom paid off for Moody. He has continued his mural-making, including painting a largescale wall for SABIS International School in Phoenix as well as a school in Miami. “I’m super stoked about it,” he says. “The youth is the future, and sometimes I can’t believe that one of my walls may have an ounce of influence on the next generation. Brick by brick, we build!”

ARIANNI MARTIN

DANCER, BALLET ARIZONA

From an early age, Arianni Martin – who has been a dancer with Ballet Arizona since 2013 – knew that she wanted to dance. “When I was 5 or 6, I saw Alicia Alonso, the prima ballerina of The National Ballet of Cuba, on Cuban television. She was my strongest influence and that’s what inspired my life to head in this direction,” Martin says. Originally from Cuba, Martin pursued a career in ballet, and when she was 9, attended the Vocational Art School of Santiago de Cuba for five years. “I worked very hard to try to stand out among many students,” she says. Her tenacity paid off and by age 14, she was selected to study at the world-renowned Cuban National Ballet School in Havana. From there, she graduated as both a professional dancer and a ballet teacher. Her next move was to audition for and join The National Ballet of Cuba. Martin danced with The National Ballet of Cuba for three years, but due to economic needs and the desire to help her family, she moved to the U.S. while on tour in Mexico. “After I crossed the border, a friend put me in contact with one of the ballet masters here at Ballet Arizona,” she says. “That was my first audition in the U.S., and they hired me.” Recently, Martin and her husband Alejandro, who is also a dancer with the company, became U.S. citizens. “We are so thankful to have achieved this milestone while working with Ballet Arizona,” she says. This season, Martin will be dancing as the Sugar Plum Fairy – among other roles – in Ballet Arizona’s The Nutcracker, which runs Dec. 13-24 at Symphony Hall. “I love that I get to play many of the roles outside of just the principal Sugar Plum Fairy, such as Harlequin, Arabian Coffee, Spanish Chocolate, and Dew Drop,” Martin says. “It’s so much fun! Ballet is a beautiful way through which I can express joy, sadness, anger, enthusiasm, and love.”

CHARMAGNE COE PAINTER

An American surrealist, Charmagne Coe expresses herself through various mediums – and without a plan or a template. She primarily uses watercolor, ink, pastel, and acrylic techniques with new perspectives in a 3D assemblage of collage and fiber arts. “With assemblage paintings, I could use everything and the kitchen sink,” she says. “My latest body of work has evolved from 2D painting and drawing into a genre I call soft brut.” Growing up, Coe learned fiber and hand arts from her mother and grandmother as a family tradition. Her father was also an artist, specifically, a fine jeweler. “My parents encouraged me in all of my artistic pursuits,” she says. “It was always a fact in my mind that I’d be an artist.” While teaching at an elementary school, Coe experimented in different art forms including pastel figurative drawing, papier-mache sculpture, jewelry-making, and mosaic. “I always needed to be creating. I didn’t realize I was accruing a whole lot of techniques in many art forms that would later be incorporated into the 3D work I’m doing right now,” Coe says. Before moving to the Valley three years ago, Coe lived in Flagstaff. No matter where she calls home, she has always been active in the art community, from local exhibits to raising awareness and funds for local causes, such as Free Arts of Arizona, by donating her artwork. This month and during December, Walter Art Gallery in Scottsdale will feature an exhibit by her. Coe’s work is also represented by Royse Contemporary in Old Town Scottsdale. “Inspiration is part of everyday life, wherever I am,” Coe says. “My creative process is pushing the boundaries harder as I am hungry to constantly learn, be humbled, and surprised. I keep painting and assembling each work until I sense a ‘just-rightness,’ something far less than perfect. What arrives are raw, multidimensional stories.”

STEPHEN HARTMAN

CO-OWNER, PHOENIX HARP CENTER & PRINCIPAL HARPIST, THE PHOENIX SYMPHONY Stephen Hartman, co-owner of Phoenix Harp Center and a principal harpist with The Phoenix Symphony, was first introduced to the harp at age 9. “Watching Captain Kangaroo and seeing the harp played on television grabbed my attention,” he says. “It set the wheels in motion to this very day.” Hartman credits his mother for playing a part in his successful orchestral career. “She has always acknowledged my musical abilities and championed getting me into the Interlochen Arts Academy for four years of high school,” he says. “As a student there, I was able to tour annually with the school orchestra to Chicago’s Orchestra Hall and New York City’s Carnegie Hall.” Before moving to Arizona in 2013, Hartman resided in Chicago and worked as an international sales manager with the world-famous Lyon & Healy Harps. “Working at the epicenter of the harp world helped position me, along with my partner Willard White, to open the Phoenix Harp Center in 2017,” he says, noting that the Phoenix Harp Center specializes in sales and rentals of Lyon & Healy, Salvi, and Dusty Strings harps while also offering lessons. “Teaching the next generation of harpists is my way of thanking the previous generation who taught me and giving my students the lessons I’ve learned over my career.” Hartman also does work for the Phoenix Chamber Music Society, which brings estemeed musicians to the Valley. This season, the society is celebrating its 60th year. “Hearing and performing with other artists truly inspires me, whether they are harpists, flutists, singers, or even pop musicians.” Hartman regularly performs with The Phoenix Symphony and Arizona Ballet, and in December, he will also perform with Phoenix Chorale. Aside from his impressive resume, during the holidays, Hartman leads a harp circle performance at St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center for the staff and patients. “The joy of music is my goal, so I bring this energy to whatever project comes my way.”

EQUESTRIAN PROPERTY SPECIALIST Josie Pakula with Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty

As a horse owner herself, Josie Pakula relates to her clients on a personal level. The luxury equestrian property specialist has four of her own—Gunny, Owen, Janis, and the newest addition, Ellie Mae. “It’s a real passion for me because horse properties is such a niche market that it really takes an agent who knows everything there is to know about horses,” Josie says. Josie is above the competition, with her hardworking enthusiasm and stellar target marketing efforts to a very specific audience. She holds an advantage over others in that she has in-depth knowledge and maintains relationships with all of the people in this niche industry, including numerous elite equestrian networking groups. Doing so affords her and her clients off-market access to properties that fit all of the wish list criteria for the perfect luxury equestrian property. After earning her Master’s degree in nursing and an MBA, Josie served eleven years in United States Army, first as a combat medic and then an Officer in the Army Nurse Corp (airborne). Returning to civilian life, she worked as a trauma nurse before becoming a stay-at-home mom. “In 2010, I had the itch to work again to basically support my horse habit. Becoming a real estate agent is the best decision I’ve ever made,” she says. Dedicated to client satisfaction, Josie works primarily by referrals and repeat business. Clients appreciate her honest, realistic advice, knowing she truly has their best interests in mind. Her tenacity and determination to help her clients are what puts Josie in the top 1% of America’s Top 100 Real Estate Agents. It is no surprise that she was voted 2019 Neighborhood Favorite Real Estate Agent by Nextdoor and awarded Top Women in Real Estate for the third time. Josie received her Broker’s License in January 2019, giving her extra in-depth knowledge to help her clients. “I owe it to my clients to be more knowledgeable, resourceful, and connected,” she says. A SOLID INVESTMENT

He is known by clients and colleagues alike as a straight shooter with realistic expectations about the market, which is part of what makes him so successful. “Whether I’m working with a buyer or seller, I always give my feedback and educate my clients with all the pros & cons. I treat every potential purchase or sale of a home for my clients as if it were my own,” Justin says. Along with his honest approach and undeniable integrity, Justin has an impeccable work ethic. He puts together a realistic game plan and goes above and beyond for his clients. “I don’t just let a home sit idly on the MLS waiting for it to sell, I pay for additional marketing and advertising that brings real results! With his phenomenal networking skills, he creates many opportunities for his clients to invest safely in multifamily real estate ventures. Recently, many of Justin’s clients invested several million dollars into a project and they have all received a 100% return on their investment in just under two years! He currently has another upcoming project for any interested investors. Justin is a huge dog lover, with two of his own—Chico and Chloe, both rescues. He says, “Chloe ‘Bear’ turns 2 in November and is a goofball that loves chasing birds and lizards, as well as walks around the lake and going to the dog park. Chico ‘Suave’ is 3 and loves giving irresistible kisses to any girl that holds him. Also nicknamed ‘my shadow,’ Chico always wants to be by my side and just loves being around people.” Justin strives to make the process enjoyable for his clients. It is no surprise that he was inducted into the Re/Max Hall of Fame in 2016, and ranked number 16 for individual agent sales in the state with $33.49 million sold in 2018. “I love getting to meet new people I wouldn’t have normally had the chance to if I just had a regular desk job. With over 30 years of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgical experience, Dr Wolin and his staff not only Talk the Talk… they also Walk the Walk. Listen to what his patients have to say about their care and surgical results… (Verified independent interview) Just a few months ago I got a good closeup view of my lips in the mirror. I was horrified. How could I possibly have gotten so many wrinkles in not only my lips but also in the areas surrounding my mouth? I never even smoked cigarettes..I immediately decided that I would try and remedy the situation. I went to a local spa where I was told that a temporary filler combined with a standard skin peel would solve my problems. After undergoing multiple injections, it was evident that the solution to my problem not in a little jar of magical potions nor in a minuscule injection of temporary filler. The problem could only be solved by a combination of permanent volumizing as well as resurfacing my skin. I had heard of Dr wolin and his greater than 25 year experience using Fat Transfer techniques to revolumize and smooth wrinkles around the mouth. I also found that he was using a fantastic chemical peel resurfacing technique called “ The Croton Oil Peel” which produced amazing smoothing of the skin without the downtime associated with Laser Resurfacing. In just 45 minutes, under local anesthesia, I have been able to reclaim my deflated and wrinkled mouth…My results were amazing…natural and permanent.

The Jetaway Music Festival returns with a new concept and major headliners

IF YOU GO… What: Jetaway Music Festival When: Nov. 8, 7 p.m.-2 a.m. Where: W Scottsdale, 7277 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale Tickets: General admission, $30; VIP, $150 Information: www. jetawaymusicfest.com

Weekend Jetaway Culinary Classic, an annual local event since 2012, returns on Nov. 8 with fresh flair and a new name and concept: Jetaway Music Festival. What was once an evening of live music and casino games for a great cause has now expanded into a music festival – still for a great cause – at W Scottsdale’s rooftop Wet Deck. Benefiting Folds of Honor Arizona, the festival will feature hip-hop artist and three-time Grammy Award-winner Nelly, an avid supporter of American service men and women currently on his 20th anniversary tour, along with DJ trio Cheat Codes, country star Dylan Scott, and several local performers. “This year, we are evolving our event, which featured everything from a game to win a private jet to a culinary showcase and always benefited a local nonprofit partner,

to give everyone in the Valley something special,” says Dillan Micus, the event’s co-founder. “With Jetaway Music Festival, we mixed country with pop, dance and rap performances by design to make this something people ages 21 to 81 will want to support. But ‘multigenerational music festival for all’ just didn’t have the same ring to it.” Beyond the live music, the event is actually nicknamed Jetaway as event partners Jetlinx and Hakkasan will auction off a round-trip private jet vacation for four to Las Vegas (rather than have attendees vie for it by playing casino games), inclusive of hotel, show tickets, bottle service at Hakkasan Night Club and more to help raise charitable funds. Also expect culinary creations from W Scottsdale plus a photo booth and beer, wine and cocktails, which are all for purchase

or included with VIP ticket packages. For those who want to make a full night of it, room packages are also available. The first package includes two VIP tickets and a one-night stay in a king bedroom for $500, while the other includes four VIP tickets and a one-night stay in a double bedroom for $900. All net proceeds of this 21+ event will help local nonprofit Folds of Honor Arizona provide educational scholarships – including private education tuition, homeschooling, tutoring, and higher education tuition assistance – to spouses and children of fallen and disabled service members. Jetaway Music Festival is sponsored by AXA Advisors Southwest, On Q Financial, Spellbound Entertainment Group, Jetlinx, and W Scottsdale.

Fashionable facelifts abound at local hot spots this fall

Several Valley haunts recently invested in upgraded amenities and fresh new looks – just in time for seasonal fun. Whether to sip, stay or play, here are some of the most impressive updates to check out.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Maya Day + Night Club In October, Maya Day + Night Club reinvented itself as Clubhouse at Maya for the fall and winter months. In place of its pool and cabanas are yard games, a treehouse-inspired bar, cozy furniture, picnic tables, and two dozen flat-screen TVs for football season. Both the food and cocktail menus have also been updated, and there are now nightly themes and events as well as pop-up parties and Instagram-worthy themed walls that regularly change. www.mayaclubaz.com. Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Recently, the resort completed renovations to its standard guest rooms, presidential suite, and Princess Pool. In the rooms, desert accents and sliding glass doors were added along with comforts like oversized, sleek stone walk-in showers; large dressing areas; and innovative technologies. The most impressive updates to the pool area are the newly refurbished cabanas and The Social, the resort’s all-new poolside restaurant. www.scottsdaleprincess.com. Hi-Fi Kitchen & Cocktails You might hear some extra “Hi-Fi” sounds from this Old Town Scottsdale bar, which brought in upgraded technology that includes state-of-theart sound and light show systems and a 20-foot LED television that projects on an entire wall. Additional flat-screen TVs were also added as well as gold graffiti-lined couches, new tables designed using classic album covers, and wall art – all in homage to pop culture and music from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. www.hifibars.com. Handlebar J Live music has always been a hallmark of this central Scottsdale mainstay, for but years on a makeshift stage. Those days are now gone as the bar recently unveiled its expansive new stage, complete with a new marquee sign of the famous Handlebar J mustache logo, upgraded lighting, and custom woodwork. There are also updated accents and decor to give the space a more country-meets-rock look, while the patio has a new brick entrance and a high-tech misting system. www.handlebarj.com. Shade Lounge Shade Lounge at W Scottsdale has made an impressive head-to-toe renovation for the first time since opening in 2008. Formerly, the bar was in a corner with a votive wall and the space was designed with South Beach, Miami, in mind, featuring stark white decor throughout. The bar is now the 360-degree centerpiece of the room. They’ve also added swanky furniture and booths and opened a full patio bursting with lush greenery and seductive dark woods. www.shadeloungescottsdale.com. Ocean Prime With newly enhanced ambiance, Ocean Prime now has a redesigned lobby, new chandeliers, a new lighting system, and fresh modern artwork. The bar in the main dining room was also removed to add spacious booth seating for guests, and new curtains were added to enhance the environment – and, as a bonus, keep the restaurant more evenly climate controlled. www.ocean-prime.com.

SCULPTURAL FORM Sculptor Mark Carroll uses steel to create art

BY HEATHER LYNN HORVAT

In June, Element Hotel at SkySong opened, also unveiling a newly commissioned original sculpture by local artist Mark Carroll as part of the property’s dedication to art. The sculpture, called Balanced, Journey, is made from stainless steel and stands more than 8 feet tall. It seeks to inspire balance, freedom and movement while welcoming guests at the hotel’s garden entrance. The preparation of Balanced, Journey took Carroll several months. Before beginning the actual sculpture, he submitted a number of drawing proposals to the hotel’s developer, Jackson-Shaw, and then made a urethane foam model so the design could be seen in 3D. This process is similar for all of his sculptures. “Drawing is a quick way to develop the concept and make many variations on the design,” Carroll says. “Multiple sketches help you to arrive at a unique solution that takes the concept to a place you would never have conceived of by only doing one drawing. “Once I have a direction, fabrication begins. As I work on the sculpture, I may make changes to the design as I see things develop and new ideas present themselves. Creative decisions are made at every phase of the process.” This artistic tenacity runs deep. Carroll grew up in a family of artists; his father was a stone and wood carver and his mother was a landscape oil painter. Carroll received his bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, then a master’s in art education for K-12. He taught high school art for eight years before focusing full time on building a business around sculpture-making. In 2009, Carroll moved from upstate New York to his current home in Cave Creek. Carroll draws inspiration from the human figure and from observing the variation of shapes and growth patterns in nature. While he has always been a carver of wood and stone, lately his passion lies with welding steel and stainless steel. “I enjoy the freedom that the welding process provides. Unlike the carving process, where I can only subtract material, with welding I can expand out in any direction, add or subtract, and have more freedom of form development.” Aside from the sculpture at Element Hotel, Carroll was commissioned to create two larger-than-life stainless steel horses for the town of Cave Creek. He also sculpted a 15-foot piece out of marble and steel titled Avondale Birds for the Avondale Civic Center. The sculptor welcomes visitors to his Cave Creek studio to see how sculptures are made and to view his new pieces. “Observing the sculptural forms created by nature, whether it is the endless variation of shapes of living creatures, the growth patterns of plant forms, or the variety of rock formations, offers enough material to fill a lifetime of creating art,” Carroll says. “The human figure is the touchstone of art as we try to understand who we are.” To learn more, visit www.thesculpturestudio.com.

PINHOLE SURGICAL TECHNIQUE:

A revolutionary new way to achieve your best smile! BEFORE A University Study revealed that 89% of patients over 20 years old have gingival recession. Receding gums can be caused by gum disease or because of excessive brushing, certain medications, clenching or grinding, or smoking. Not only are receding gums painful and unattractive, but the actual bone underneath is being lost, leading to tooth loss. The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a revolutionary procedure that solves the problem of receding gums. PST offers natural-looking, long-lasting healthy smiles to those suffering from receded gums, giving patients a beautiful new smile in as little as an hour. Since nothing more than local anesthesia is needed, patients can return to work after their appointment. The Pinhole Surgical Technique takes the place of traditional gum grafts, with minimal discomfort or pain. In fact, recovery time is virtually nonexistent with PST. The results are more predictable, less noticeable, and will last as long as any other gum correction procedure. Stunning new smiles can be seen immediately. Dr. Erik Svans, DDS was among the first dentists to study the Pinhole Surgical Technique under its inventor, Dr. John C. Chao, DDS in 2014. Since introducing

AFTER PST to his practice, Dr. Svans has seen very predictable and reliable long-term results. There is no scalpel, incision, or stitches with PST, making it virtually painfree. This innovative procedure uses a .1 inch “pinhole” opening to reposition a patient’s receded gumline to its healthy, natural location. After repositioning the gum tissue to cover the exposed root surface, Dr. Svans strategically places collagen through the Pinhole to stabilize the tissue in place. The collagen resets the gum tissue and makes it stronger than before. Patients can return to normal eating that very night.

BEFORE

Previously, treatment for receded gumlines was very painful and required cutting donor gum tissue from the roof of a patient’s mouth. The donor tissue was then stitched to the receded site, which had also been cut or “flapped” in preparation for the graft. Recovery for this traditional surgical technique requires two to three weeks with prescription pain medicine. In contrast, PST is a kinder, gentler procedure since it only requires a repositioning of existing gum tissue over the exposed root surface. With PST, Dr. Svans can treat one to all teeth in one visit, in as little as 30 minutes. Patients are amazed with the results, instantly falling in love with their healthy, beautiful new smiles. If you’re ready to stop living with the pain and embarrassment of recessed gums, the Pinhole Surgical Technique may be right for you! Schedule a complimentary consultation by calling Dr. Erik Svans at 480.219.8760 or visit www.PinholeAZ.com.

CANAL CONVERGENCE, PHOTO COURTESY OF SCOTTSDALE ARTS

CANAL CONVERGENCE

This yearly series of artistic installations and events along the Scottsdale Waterfront will light up the city with 10 larger-thanlife works of art from Nov. 8 through 17. Following a theme of The Story of Water, this free public arts project will include showstoppers that speak to the concept. Returning with an all-new piece is Walter Productions, the Scottsdale-based art studio behind last year’s Floatus installation and fire show. The work, titled Water Serpent, is a 200-foot-long floating sculpture that will produce nightly choreographed fire shows. Another fan-favorite, artist collective Squidsoup – who made its local debut at SMoCA in 2017 – will display its first Canal Convergence installation. Titled Standing Wave, it will use 600 interconnected orbs of light and sound to simulate a wave over the Arizona Canal. The festivities will also include music and dance performances, food vendors, a beer

and wine garden, family-friendly activities, artist talks, and creative workshops. www.canalconvergence.com.

BEAUX ARTS

On Nov. 9, join Scottsdale Artists’ School (SAS) for this annual fundraising event and celebration of all things art. The evening will include a light dinner, drinks and music, all in a large party tent on the SAS grounds. Guests, who are encouraged to dress in ’30s, ’40s, or ’50s glam to complement a painting of the event’s signature artist Joseph Lorusso, will also be able to purchase original works of art including drawings, oil paintings, sculptures, and watercolors – as well as event and travel packages – at a silent auction and raffle benefiting SAS’s educational programming and scholarships. VIP tickets include early admission (at 5 p.m.), hors d’oeuvres, Champagne, access to an exclusive seating area, and an early opportunity to close out silent auction

bids. General admission, $125; VIP, $200. 6 p.m. www.scottsdaleartschool.org.

HEARD MUSEUM’S 90TH ANNIVERSARY

To commemorate nine decades, this internationally recognized museum of American Indian art will showcase signature works from its permanent collection, including Pueblo pottery, Navajo textiles, and Hopi katchina dolls. And now through April 5, 2020, painter David Hockney’s prolific Yosemite and Masters of California Basketry will be on display, marking the first Arizona exhibition of this world-renowned artist. With 28 images on view, Hockney’s exhibit includes photographic collages and interpretive iPad drawings that demonstrate the profound influence the natural world continues to have on art of all mediums. Alongside these, 20th-century indigenous Californian basketry made by Miwok and Mono Lake Paiute women will be showcased, giving

viewers a glimpse into a unique artistic vision of Yosemite. www.heard.org.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC

The Phoenix Theatre Company will bring this classic to the stage from Nov. 13 through Dec. 29, charming audiences with the beloved tale of an Austrian governess who falls in love with the family she cares for on the eve of World War II. The Sound of Music is an iconic entry into the repertoire of Rodgers and Hammerstein that intertwines inspiring messages about the strength of love and family with unforgettable numbers like My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi, and Edelweiss. Times vary. Tickets start at $41. www.phoenixtheatre.com.

ARTFEST OF SCOTTSDALE Immerse yourself in the annual transformation of Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza into a vibrant arts festival showcasing the works of 120 artists from across the nation, with jewelers, painters, crafters, sculptors, and more gathering to celebrate the local arts community. The family- and pet-friendly event will take place Nov. 23 and 24, with two live music stages, a variety of hands-on kids’ activities, and delicious food – all in the setting of a stunning sculpture garden. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Parking and admission are free. www.888artfest.com.

WONDERSPACES: ELSEWHERE

Wonderspaces – a permanent exhibit that opened at Scottsdale Fashion Square earlier this year – recently unveiled its latest series of immersive installations. Titled Elsewhere, this new experience is comprised of 13 unique installations that collectively aim to make attendees question what they know to be true in our physical world and ponder all the things that could be. Standout interactive artworks include Candy Chang’s Confessions, which allows guests to pen a confession on a wooden plaque in a private booth before hanging it on the wall alongside hundreds of others as a form of catharsis and compassion, and Hoshi by Nonotak Studio, which uses an enthralling combination of mirrors, light and sound to represent an infinite space. Reservations required. It is suggested to purchase your tickets in advance online and to allot 80 minutes. $24. www.wonderspaces.com.

Experience SMoCA’s new installation by Squidsoup, the creators of 2017’s well-loved Ocean of Light: Submergence. Now on display outside of the museum is Murmuration, a lively piece of artwork that transforms itself from day to night. During daytime, the light-based structure provides a melodious auditory experience, perfectly in tune with nature. Once night hits, the piece comes to

life in an audiovisual representation. Synced with the spirited music, it whirls around the sides of the museum in a graceful reflection of its namesake, murmuration, which means a flock of starlings. www.smoca.org.

Luxe WHEELS

2019 LEXUS UX

The sub-compact crossover offers luxury and fuel economy for urban-focused drivers BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS 2019 Lexus UX Base price: $32,150

The sub-compact luxury crossover utility vehicle market is extremely popular and equally competitive. Since many vehicles in the class are very much alike, styling can be an imperative market differentiator. With that in mind, Lexus introduced the UX, its smallest and least expensive SUV. The UX stands out with two models: the front-wheel-drive UX 200 and the vehicle tested here, the all-wheel drive UX 250h. As the only hybrid in its class, the UX 250h is offered in Luxury and F Sport trims and powered by a 2.0liter, 181-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and a seven-horsepower electric motor. The exterior styling is noticeably Lexus, with its dominant spindle grille. The proportions give it the look and feel of a hatchback, even with the SUV-like body cladding about the wheel wells, and the drive feels similar to a sedan thanks to its low stance and 18-inch run-flat tires. Don’t expect a sporty drive experience, even on the F Sport, which includes some luxury-oriented features but no under-the-hood or suspension modifications. Also know that even with allwheel drive, the UX is not an off-roader, though it will get greater traction on slippery roads.

108

So Scottsdale! November ‘19

The cabin is generally quiet, but the engine gets noisy under hard acceleration. Overall, the ride is pleasant, but the UX emphasizes economy over performance, so handling and maneuverability are nothing special. Multiple standard active safety systems help the UX stand out from its competitors. Inside, high-quality materials and workmanship are pure Lexus. The long list of standard features includes Apple CarPlay (but not Android Auto) and a 4G LTE mobile hotspot. The interior can be upgraded with options like a larger center screen, wireless charging, and a heated steering wheel. The cargo area is small but can be expanded by folding the seats down. The infotainment system is controlled by a fussy touchpad on the center console. Fortunately, there’s also a small pod with dials and buttons for manual operation, but you still have to go into the infotainment system for functions like adjusting the air conditioning or heat. While the UX is one of the last vehicles to arrive in the sub-compact luxury utility vehicle class, with excellent bang for your buck and exclusive hybrid availability (for now), it will certainly find an audience.

Price as tested: $43,450 Engine: 2.0-liter V-4 electric motor hybrid Horsepower: 181 Fuel economy: 41/38 mpg city/ highway Seating: 5 Fab features: Available hybrid engine Stylish, upscale interior Smooth driving and riding

CULINARY CONVERGENCE Quivira Los Cabos offers an epicurean odyssey by the sea BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Gourmands from across the globe are converging in Mexico for the epicurean experience of a lifetime. As part of the Pueblo Bonito Resort family, Quivira Los Cabos’ five-day, four-night Culinary Odyssey package brings together the finest culinary offerings – and then some – to impress even the most discerning palates. The extravagance begins at check-in as guests are whisked to The Towers at Pacifica, an exclusive “resort-within-a-resort” enclave within the Quivira Los Cabos resort complex. The Towers’ 47 guest rooms and suites offer private terraces, including six suites with individual plunge pools and one magnificent, 3,200-square-foot presidential suite. All have enhanced amenities and 24-hour butler service certified by the British Butler Institute. A third tower, which can be reached by a sky bridge, features a VIP Whale Watching Lounge. This area is exclusive to guests of The Towers, and has a state-ofthe-art fitness center as well as breakfast, snacks and cocktails. Those who visit during December through March can enjoy frequent (almost hourly) whale

sightings from the comfort of their rooms. Beyond the accommodations, the Culinary Odyssey package includes four lavish dinner experiences (one each night), starting with a six-course tasting menu and wine pairings at the lauded LaFrida. Dedicated to Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, this elegant dining room, decorated with reproductions of Kahlo’s paintings, serves classic yet inventive Mexican cuisine. Many of the wines selected are drawn from Mexico’s Guadalupe Valley in Baja California, an award-winning appellation. Another dinner showcases Peninsula, a beachfront restaurant located in Pacifica’s third tower that specializes in regional cuisine highlighting the bounty of Baja’s fresh seafood and local produce. Peninsula affords expansive views of the beach, sea and sky as well as an a la carte dinner menu that includes a choice of three different ceviches and a variety of fish, poultry and meat entrees. Next, guests will take part in an alfresco dinner at Quivira Steakhouse, located beachside at the Quivira Golf Club, with a surf-and-turf dinner and wine pairings. Special care was taken to curate wines from Guadalupe Valley, which is known as Mexico’s version of Napa Valley. The final dinner option offers a choice of customized experiences, notably a romantic dinner for two on the beach under the stars, which includes a tequila and mezcal tasting guided by the resort’s spirits sommelier. The Culinary Odyssey package (including the resort stay) starts at $4,375 per couple. For an additional charge, guests can add enhancements, including a cooking class where guests use herbs and other ingredients grown on-site, a fishing expedition where guests catch a portion of their dinners, and even a culinary walking tour to hot spots around town. To learn more, visit www.pueblobonito.com, and to book the Culinary Odyssey package, call 1.800.990.8250.

Known as Florida’s cultural coast, Sarasota and its surrounding county is enriched by its artistic offerings. There are a plethora of museums, art galleries, and performing arts venues around town, including The Ringling, which has ties to the Ringling Bros. Circus. Visitors can also tee off at one of the area’s many golf courses, lounge on the beach with a cocktail, hike some trails at Myakka River State Park, pay their respects at the Sarasota National Cemetery, or stroll through the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, then top it all off by indulging in some of the city’s best dining options. Start your trip off by booking a stay at the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota. Located on 11 acres near the center of town, this 266room hotel has all the perks one would expect from Ritz-Carlton. Public Art Sarasota is a hub for street art, meaning that there could be a thought-provoking mural or sculpture around any corner. The city is well-known for Unconditional Surrender, a sculptural depiction of the famous photograph of a sailor celebrating the end of World War II with a kiss. The bayfront piece has definitely turned heads, but has gotten locals and visitors talking about art all the same. Sarasota also offers up other public art displays throughout the year. Embracing Our Differences (www.embracingourdifferences.org) is an outdoor exhibit taking place through April 2020 that is intended to demonstrate the enriching effects that diversity has on our lives. The exhibit – an extensive array of huge images created by professional artists, art students, and even young children from around the world – has attracted nearly 1 million people to the Sarasota bayfront since its launch in 2004. Sarasota Opera House Sarasota Opera completed its internationally acclaimed Verdi Cycle in 2016, making it the only company in the world to have performed every work of Giuseppe Verdi. The theater also underwent a $20 million renovation in 2008 to enhance audience amenities and update technical facilities. It’s a stunning venue inside and out and if you’re there during the season (October through March each year), don’t miss out on some world-class opera. www.sarasotaopera.org.

The Ringling Learn the history of “The Greatest Show on Earth” and the family behind it at The Ringling, which brings together art, architecture and circus at the State Art Museum of Florida. This compound is made up of many different buildings, including the Ca’ d’Zan mansion (the Ringling’s winter home) and the Circus Museum (currently closed for renovation). The Ringling is also home to outdoor gardens and one of the preeminent arts and cultural collections in the United States: the Museum of Art, which is housed in a grand Mediterranean-style palazzo and covers 21 galleries. www.ringling.org. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens This world-renowned attraction offers 15 acres of rare and exotic plants and flowers to explore while overlooking the Sarasota bayfront. The garden is a respected research center, and features include a conservatory that feels like a rainforest as well as butterfly and bamboo gardens. There’s also a children’s rainforest garden that allows young ones to experience treetop living (the garden is elevated) in addition to a waterfall, caves and an adventure trail. www.selby.org. Siesta Key Sarasota is famous for its beaches, and those on Siesta Key rank among some of the best in the country. This 8-mile island is accessible by two bridges from the mainland. The three picturesque beaches – Siesta Beach, Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach from north to south – attract sunbathers by day and partiers by night. www.visitsarasota.com.

Where to Dine Summer House Steak & Seafood Upon entering this surf-and-turf concept, guests will spot a 1,000-gallon fish tank designed exclusively for Summer House that spans 14 feet of the restaurant floor. Summer House’s menu features a must-try 20-ounce lobster tail and hand-selected cuts from prestigious ranches that produce some of the finest all-natural and sustainable meats. www.summerhousesiestakey.com. Ophelia’s on the Bay When you visit Ophelia’s, the first things you’ll notice are the two glass-walled dining rooms and the open-air patio that give visitors an unhindered view of Little Sarasota Bay. Guests can select dishes from a menu packed full of classic American cuisine accented with international flavors. Fish is flown in daily and paired with fresh ingredients that taste even better when enjoyed while admiring the natural beauty of Florida’s landscape. www.opheliasonthebay.net. UNIQUE TO DRINK Cocktails featuring uncommon ingredients

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Looking for a little something different during cocktail hour? Mix things up this month with inspired libations, each artfully made using creative, off-the-beaten-path ingredients. Bitter Antidote Bitters Bar & Food This mood ring-like libation combines vodka, coconut rum, cherry juice, lime and nutty orgeat with butterfly pea flower powder, which acts as a color-changing agent. It is delivered to the table with each ingredient in its own beaker so that guests can see the colors change as the drink takes shape right before their eyes. $18. www.bittersbar.com. Ghost Pepper Mole Margarita CRUjiente Tacos Inspired by mole poblano, a traditional Mexican sauce known for its spice and chocolate notes, this cocktail starts with mezcal, lime juice and housemade agave syrup. Then, roasted corn, ancho chile syrup, and AZ Bitters Lab Más Mole chocolate bitters are added. The kicker: A Hawaiian smoked ghost pepper sauce from Adobo Loco is added. $10. www.crutacos.com. Not Your Granny’s Apple So Far, So Good Already bursting with sour apple, cucumber and herbaceous fennel, there's no shortage of unique flavors at play in this cocktail. But what really makes this drink sing is Charanda, a sugarcane-based spirit much like rum that’s native to Mexico's Michoacan region and tastes like butter-infused vanilla. $10. www.thechurchillphx.com. Viridescent CIVANA Latin for “becoming green,” the Viridescent cocktail is equal parts spirited and health-conscious, featuring a mix of Hendrick’s Gin, fresh carrot juice, fresh lime juice, and powdered spirulina. A bluegreen algae superfood, spirulina adds antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to the cocktail. $16. www.civana.com. spirit from the 1800s that was formally reintroduced to the U.S. market in 2018; Cocchi Americano, an aromatized wine from Italy; and a zesty yuzu blend. Beyond that, it features pink peppercorns and redcurrant cordial star for a hint of spice and sweetness. $13. www.littleritualsbar.com. Mate Margarita Bourbon & Bones At first glance, this may seem like the simplest of margaritas. However, thanks to the addition of a South American caffeinated tea called mate, it is anything but. Mate is added to the agave nectar and the tequila during the build, then used in the creamy foam on top, which featues a Southeast Asian citrus fruit called calamansi. $16. www.bourbonandbonesaz.com. The Enabler Clever Koi In addition to the George Dickel No. 12 Whisky that shines in every sip, this twist on the classic whiskey sour uses smoked sea salt, juice from grilled lemons, and Grade B maple syrup – a darker, richer and thicker version of the syrup than one might use on pancakes. $12. www.thecleverkoi.com. Black Raven Raven Gastropub Activated charcoal is known for its detoxifying, digestive and anti-aging properties. At Raven, this jet-black super mineral is mixed with Grey Goose Cherry Noir Vodka and lemonade for a tangy, sweet libation that looks dark but is light and refreshing. $12. www.ravengp.com. Redenbacher Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour Its name borrowed from a certain famous popcorn pioneer, this drink shines with aromas of sousvide popcorn and butter-washed bourbon, stirred with brown butter syrup and bitters that all work together to transport you to the bright lights of a bustling state fair. $12. www.bitterandtwistedaz.com.

ROOTED REFRESHMENT The Covenant’s Beet the Heat brings earthy, warming fall flavors to the forefront

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Since its opening in 2017, The Covenant’s cocktail menu has been a marriage between O.H.S.O. Brewery + Distillery’s spirits and fresh ingredients, sometimes those already in The Covenant’s kitchen. And, in this case, marriage is more than just a metaphor for the perfect pairings, given The Covenant owner Carri Gardner is married to O.H.S.O. owner Jon Lane. On its fall menu, The Covenant continues to brilliantly and thoughtfully showcase several O.H.S.O. libations, but it also experiments with some of the distillery’s other concoctions. Beet the Heat ($12), for example, features a tincture from the distillery. “Tinctures are made by infusing herbs, spices and a few drops of alcohol over time,” says bar manager Ashlynn Medina, who developed the fall menu. “For this cocktail, the tincture is also infused with jalapenos for bite.” The resulting infusion is combined with The Botanist Island Dry Gin, known for its strong floral notes. “We then turned to our food menu for inspiration,” Medina says. “People rave about our red beet reduction that’s used on salads and in some entrees, so we experimented by adding the earthy emulsion to the recipe to add seasonality and depth.” Next, nutty, sugary orgeat syrup as well as both lemon and orange zest are added for sweetness and acid. “It’s topped with egg whites before getting a dry shake until there is some foam, and then we add ice and wet shake,” Medina says. The frothy contents are double-strained into a coupe glass and garnished with beet reduction droplets (and sometimes a fun design) along with a dehydrated lime. “Beet the Heat brings jalapeno-level heat, but with distinct fall flair,” Medina says. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen Christophe Mihy of El Chorro

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Christophe Mihy is the executive chef of El Chorro, where he specializes in refined French classics and seasonally driven, locally sourced modern American dishes.

Based on your accent, guessing you are French? Yes and no. My father was the hotel director at The Beverly Hilton in the 1960s, so I was technically born in Burbank, California. However, we moved back to our native Provence, France, before I turned 1. What took you back? My grandfather passed and left my family a hotel to run in the south of France. I grew up there and quickly found my way into the kitchen. I actually learned English solely to open more doors in the culinary world once I decided to make it my career. Share some highlights from your storied career. Over the past 30 years, I’ve worked around the world including the Caribbean, Madagascar and France. In the U.S., I served as executive chef at the acclaimed five-star, AAA Four Diamond Le Montrachet and later as executive chef of the award-winning Envy the Steakhouse, both in Las Vegas. What brought you to Arizona? My wife’s family lives here. In 2016 while having dinner with friends, I heard that El Chorro was seeking an experienced executive chef, so I jumped at the chance. Tell us about the menu at El Chorro. We have modern spins on American and French classics, and our signature dishes have been crowd-pleasers for 20-plus years. We have seasonal specials and ample options for those with dietary concerns. What is your favorite thing to cook? As a child, I hated fish and vegetables. Once I became a chef, a mentor challenged me to cook both of them over and over using my imagination and skills (not to mention herbs and spices) until I liked them. Today, they are my favorite things to cook – and eat. El Chorro, 5550 E. Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley; 480.948.5170; www.elchorro.com.

Atlas Bistro

Atlas is almost out of plain sight given it is tucked in next to AZ Wine Company – Arizona’s largest independent distributor of wines from across the globe – so you have to be “in the know” to even find it. But once you do, it is well worth it as Atlas is, very literally, one of the hidden gem restaurants in Arizona. Lauded chef Cory Oppold offers a three-course tasting menu Wednesday to Saturday that changes seasonally (and sometimes more often) and starts at $65 per person, with a dessert or cheese course for an additional charge. A bonus: Atlas is a BYOB concept, so you are welcome to bring your own bottle of wine or buy one at AZ Wine Company next door before starting your culinary adventure. www.atlasbistrobyob.com.

Café Monarch

Named by TripAdvisor as among the top three fine dining restaurants in the country, this family-owned and -operated establishment is tailor-made for special occasions and offers a four-course menu Tuesday to Sunday (save for at the bar, where a la carte ordering is also available). Course one features a soup or small plate, course two is a choice of seafood or salad, course three is a choice between heartier dishes such as pasta and risotto, and course four is the entree. Price is determined based on each guest’s entree selection, which includes Maple Leaf Farms duck breast ($100), lobster ravioli ($105), a surf-and-turf trio ($155), and Niman Ranch rib-eye steak ($165), among others. There is also a four-course vegetarian tasting menu and a selection of desserts for an additional charge. www.cafemonarch.com.

Guests can then choose from healthy but crave-worthy entrees such as tofu steak with mixed mushroom tobanyaki, a four-piece selection of vegan nigiri ‘sushi,’ or smoky grilled avocado drizzled with savory ponzu sauce. WATER PARK WONDERLAND The family-friendly Great Wolf Lodge Arizona debuts in Scottsdale

STORY AND PHOTOS BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

In late September, the 400,000-squarefoot Great Wolf Lodge opened its doors in Scottsdale. An ultra-family-friendly resort and entertainment mecca, Great Wolf Lodge boasts 350 suites, including extralarge themed cabins and suites that sleep six to 13 guests and resemble log cabins and caves far more than traditional hotel quarters in a desert. The star attraction is the 85,000-square-foot indoor water park exclusive to resort guests. Its centerpiece is the Talking Stick Treehouse, a multilevel play structure featuring suspension bridges, slides, spray stations and other water elements. Attached to the play structure are five water slides, two of which even toddler-age children can use. Beyond the play structure, there is River Canyon Run, a family raft ride that sends up to four riders on a whitewater adventure down one of the park’s longest slides; Diamondback Drop, a first-of-its-kind four-person, high-speed raft ride filled with curves and thrills; Alberta Falls, a tube slide with drops, chutes, and 180-degree and 360-degree banked curves; Slap Tail Pond, a wave pool; Crooked Creek, a lazy river;

and Chinook Cove, an activity pool with basketball hoops and a floating obstacle course. There is also a special section of the water park called Whooping Hollow, where toddlers and younger guests can safely enjoy a play pool and water activities geared solely toward their age group and size. In addition to the water wonderland, more fun awaits at the resort’s Great Wolf Adventure Park, which features nine holes of mini-golf; a 21-foot rock climbing wall; a ropes course; an arcade; a mirror maze; mini bowling; a mining experience that gives children the chance to pan for gemstones and minerals; and MagiQuest, Great Wolf Lodge’s exclusive live-action adventure game. Executive chef Grant Baker heads all food and beverage on property. He comes to the resort from Great Wolf Lodge Wisconsin Dells, bringing two decades of culinary training and experience to the table. There are nine food and drink options on-site, plus room service. Notable venues include Hungry as a Wolf, which offers pizza, sandwiches and salads to go; Timbers, a casual Mexican concept; The Watering Hole, a poolside option with blended drinks, craft beer, and soft drinks; and Barnwood, the signature dining venue with a shareable plates and thoughtfully developed regional dishes as well as a cocktail menu for Mom and Dad. There is also a candy shop – Great Wolf Candy Company – with chocolates, packaged candies and bulk candy. The opening marks Great Wolf Lodge’s 18th location in North America. As with its other locations, the Arizona resort will also offer nightly story time in its grand lobby. Great Wolf Lodge Arizona, 7333 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale; 480.948.9653; www.greatwolf.com.
